Got married or had a baby in the US? If you're a Turkish citizen, the event usually needs to be registered in Turkish records too, and that is done through the Turkish consulate. Keeping both countries' records in step helps later with IDs, passports, inheritance and your children's documents. Each consulate publishes its own checklist, so check yours before sending originals.
- 01
Where to apply
Through the Turkish consulate.
Marriages concluded before US authorities are registered in Turkish records through the consulate. In many cases the application can be sent by mail.
- 02
Marriage
What the file usually holds.
- The original marriage certificate and a copy
- Both spouses' passports and Turkish IDs
- The foreign spouse's birth certificate
- An earlier divorce decree, if any
- 03
Birth
For a child under 18.
At least one parent must be a Turkish citizen. Bring the original birth certificate naming both parents. Parents' names must match Turkish records.
- 04
Born outside marriage
Both parents apply in person.
If the parents are not married, both usually need to attend the consulate together.
- 05
Translations
Each consulate has its own list.
Translation and apostille requirements differ between consulates. Check your consulate's current checklist before sending originals.
